Lone Mountain Ranch in Montana Has the Most Magical Winter Sleigh Ride

Lone Mountain Ranch, in Big Sky, Montana, is a year-round destination that becomes positively magical in the wintertime.

With as many as 300 inches of snowfall a year, Big Sky is an ideal destination for winter enthusiasts. And to make the most of the mountain magic, the ranch has offered a special dinner experience every winter for more than 35 years.

Dinner guests are taken by horse-drawn sleigh up to a cozy cabin surrounded by snow-covered pines, where inside they're greeted by the cozy light of oil lanterns, live music, and a prime rib dinner.

The ranch, home to the amazing Horn & Cantle restaurant, takes food seriously, so you'll want to bring your appetite on this trip. And when it comes time for the sleigh ride dinner, the ranch's 100-year-old railroad stove is on full display (and in use).

While the term “digital detox” has become so popular it's practically overused, Lone Mountain is a place to truly unplug. Surrounded by mountains, the ranch has hardly any cell coverage (although there is Wi-Fi for the unplugging-challenged), and guests would be wise to take the opportunity to leave their phones behind.

Reservations for the sleigh ride dinner go quickly, so you’ll want to plan this winter adventure far ahead of time. The sleigh ride dinner is offered from December through March, and Christmastime is especially popular. If you can imagine a starlit sleigh ride through the snow, complete with cocoa, to your very own mountain cabin, it's easy to see why.
