Local students hand out coffee as a thank you to veterans

BRUSHFORK, WV (WVNS) – Brushfork Elementary School is known as a Purple Star School. This means that there are a large number of military children attending who may have a parents or guardians who are currently serving.

Brushfork Elementary not only makes their military children feel included, but aims to give back to those who served.

Bright and early on the morning of Thursday, April 18, 2024, the drop-off line was filled with veterans who were waiting for some hot coffee and a donut. 5th grader Zoey Griffey walked us through the process.

“We are handing out coffee for people at Brushfork and they are going to come out and support our community by giving them coffee,” said Griffey.

Brushfork students were not the only ones helping. JROTC Students from Princeton Senior High School were also present to help pass out coffee.

JROTC Member Elijah Wood says no matter the number of sweets or drinks they may hand out, nothing compares to the sacrifice these men and women have made.

“There is nothing we can say that can honor their sacrifice,” said Wood.

This is the third year Brushfork Elementary School has handed out items to the veterans. The week of the 18th was also Spirit Week at the school. Thursday was “R.E.D” day which stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed.”

Both students and faculty hope to continue this tradition for years to come.
