Local Skier: "Whistler Blackcomb Needs A Miracle" After Warm Temps And Rain

It's no secret that this ski season has proved to be a mixed bag thus far.

This video, shared by outdoors YouTuber Rise & Alpine, further evinces that notion, showing the temporarily (hopefully!) icy slopes of Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia.

It's true. Like the rest of the Pacific Northwest, Whistler Blackcomb could use a snowy reset after a recent bout of warm temperatures and rain.

Earlier this week, I was texting a friend in Seattle, Washington, before my return home for the holidays, planning a potential excursion to the mountains. "I hiked rails yesterday," he texted back. "That's how bad it is."

This friend, ladies, and gentlemen, is not someone who willingly skis rails when big mountain terrain is open.

That's the tragedy—the Pacific Northwest has the goods when the coverage is decent.

I spent several years skiing Whistler Blackcomb, and when the mountain has good snow, it's tough to beat. In my book, the resort's Peak Express has some of the best high-altitude terrain on the continent, boasting a litany of committing big mountain test pieces. Sadly, that chair isn't currently open.

Still, Whistler Blackcomb is doing an admirable job working with what they've got. About half of its lifts and trails are open. The forecast could bring good tidings, too. Heavy snow is predicted at the British Columbian ski resort starting next week.

In the meantime, carving skis and edge tuners exist for a reason. Don't neglect them. And, of course, think snow.
