Local scouts celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting celebration

ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) – On Friday the Department of Public Works in Escanaba held their Arbor Day Tree Planting event. Local scouts came together to participate in the celebration.

“Today we have our Annual Tree Planting Ceremony in Escanaba at Ludington Park,” Mark Rose, Asst. District Commissioner. “We are with the City of Escanaba Public Works crew. We have now historically for years come down with all the local scouts. Boy scouts and girl scouts together all come down and take part in the celebration. The City of Escanaba is a member of what they call the “Tree City USA”, and one of the requirements is you have to have a tree planting program to do this. You also have to have a public ceremony, and celebration like this.”

Today was not only to celebrate trees, but it was also to teach the scouts about “becoming a better citizen for tomorrow.”.

“I would like the public to know that the kids you see here,” said Rose. “Yes, they are having fun in the elements and doing stuff, but they are our future. We want to impart on them the principles, and the things that we feel important in community and being active in that. That is what the scouting programs do. We have both boy scouts and girl scouts here today, and our goal is to give them a well-balanced structured environment where they can learn and grow and become good citizens for tomorrow. We are building new people for tomorrow.”
