Local restaurant health violations: Cathedral City donut shop shut down due to cockroaches

Weekly restaurant inspection report from Riverside County Public Health Department.

A Cathedral City donut shop was shut down by Riverside County environmental health inspectors due to a cockroach inspection and improper food storage temperatures, according to reports conducted Oct. 6 through 12.

Swiss Donut on Ramon Road was closed following an inspection on Oct. 10.

Major violations pose an imminent risk to public health and warrant the immediate closure of a food facility or immediate correction, while minor violations do not pose a public health risk, but do warrant correction.

2 major violations

Swiss Donut, 69-115 Ramon Road, Cathedral City

  • A half gallon carton of half and half stored with an internal temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. | The item was voluntarily discarded. Food must be stored at or below 41 degrees or at or above 135 degrees.

  • A German cockroach infestation in the front retail storage area, warewash area and back storage area. Also observed flies in the facility. | Facility was closed.

  • Minor violations include: No food safety certificate or food handler card provided at time of the inspection; inadequate handwashing supplies and equipment; all three basins at the three-compartment warewash sink were not being utilized; hot water measured at 112.5 degrees and not 120 degrees; gaps around doors and some that do not close; donut making ingredients not stored in approved storage container with tight-fitting lid; unapproved dispenser for the half and half and creamers; floor, cabinets and shelving lined with cardboard and newspapers, a leaking drain pipe and an ice maker in disrepair; detailed cleaning needed on multiple appliances and storage areas; utensils and equipment handled and stored in unapproved manner; refrigerator thermometer missing; wiping towels stored on countertops; personal beverage stored inside refrigerator; hole in wall and gaps in ceiling; grease and food debris found on floors, floor sink and prep table wall and more.

  • The facility was closed and downgraded due a German cockroach infestation. Reinspection will occur after the closure violation and others have been corrected and facility is reopened.

Castaneda's Mexican Food, 78-395 Varner Road, Suite E, Palm Desert

  • Potentially hazardous foods shall be held at or below 41 F or at or above 135 F. Pico de gallo was discovered at 45 F, and two bins of shredded cheese were found at 47-48 F. | Manager placed bins inside 2- door fridge to rapidly cool;

  • Observed salsas in the flip top cooler for self service area measured at 47-49 F. | Manager placed bins inside fridge within the hour;

  • Observed a bin of chicken on top of steam table measured at 120 F. Operator stated they cooked within 30 minutes. | Operator reheated the chicken during time of inspection.

  • Repeat violation: observed the 3-compartment sink at 108.4 F, when hot water is required to be at a minimum of 120 F.

  • Minor violations include: Hand wash station next to the prep sink had soiled wiping cloths inside sink; no paper towels inside the paper towel dispenser in the women's restroom; a bin of veggies on the floor under the rack in the walk-in cooler; five repairs needed to various items missing screws and a sink with a leak; stains, grease accumulation and food residue found on walls and floors; one expired food handler card; grout and wall holes that need to be sealed.

  • Operator has a minimum of one week to comply unless otherwise stated. A follow-up inspection will be conducted then.

No major violations, but 20 points deducted (B grade)

El Patio Palm Springs, 139 E. Andreas Road, Palm Springs

  • Minor violations include: Observed an employee consume food inside the cooks line; knife stored inside the sink basin of the kitchen handwash sink; paper hand towels stored on top of the dispenser at sink inside the bar; potentially hazardous food items inside fridge measured below 41 F; a large pan of cooked rice cooled on a countertop in the cooks line; 0 ppm chlorine found inside the sanitizer basin; disposable glove used as a drain plug inside the sanitizer basin; container of raw mussels inside a refrigerator in the cooks line; doors leading into the busser station/ kitchen and bar propped open; an opened bulk package of salt on a dry storage rack; multiple containers of food to be double stacked with saran wrap in between; multiple containers of food to be stored uncovered with no food; missing ice bin cover at the outdoor bar and more.

Grade A restaurants

An "A" grade, or a score of 90 to 100 points, means a restaurant passed an inspection and met minimum health standards.
