Local organization gives away suits to graduating seniors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Can a free tailored suit help to make sure graduating high school seniors in Memphis are successful in life?

An organization called Project Stands feels it’s one of the key threads in helping students at “George Washington Carver College and Career Academy.” Their goal is to help ensure soon-to-be grads are college and career-ready.

Volunteers spend their time sorting through racks of suits and boxes of shoes to help graduating seniors prepare for a perfect fit. This is the annual Project Stand fitting and presentation of suits to the students.

“The suit is nice you know. I love suits and I love to dress up and look presentable for people, you know,” said Alan King, graduating senior.

Throughout the year, donations are made to Project Stand.

“So, We expect them to take these suits to be able to go out for a job interview. if they’re standing in front of a school, their college of their choice for a presentation, we want them to feel nice, look good, and take what we’ve learned throughout the school year and be successful as they move forward,” said Dr. Tarol Clements, Sr. Manager for Project Stand.

“Project Stand has given me a lot of opportunities for me to put on a suit. Before I never had that, and I think that’s really important to me that they’re giving me the resources and then you have to leap in and do it yourself. So, it’s very important,” said Jenae Jones, graduating senior. “So, everyone was excited and happy to put on a suit together. And be in a professional setting.”

It’s also important for many proud parents to watch their children pose for the camera in their new suits.

“Project Stand is a great organization that helps me mentally, financially, and emotionally, and most importantly as a man,” King said.

Project Stand is also involved in mentoring, academic assistance, post-education planning, and offering other resources to students and stakeholders in Memphis.
