Local nonprofit to host free Mammogram screenings for everyone May 8th

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- The National Breast Cancer Foundation Incorporated shows that more than 300,000 women and nearly 3,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone.

One local nonprofit organization is making sure men and women sign up for mammogram screenings.

There’s a new local twist in the effort in the fight to detect breast cancer and save lives. This one doesn’t only target women.

“So, we do not want to limit it to just the ladies, we do want the men to come out and get screened too because it affects men as well,” Dukes said.

Jamilah Dukes is President of The Columbia County Health, Wellness, and Fitness Expo. She says the event includes free mammogram screening– all you have to do is sign up.

“We are in need of women and men to sign up because in order for us to get the mobile unit out, we have to have a certain amount of participants.”

Piedmont Augusta will be partnering with the nonprofit, providing screening resources.

Whether you’re not insured, underinsured, or completely insured, organization leaders encourage you to get checked.

“We provide these services for you– for you to be able to come out and partake of these services. So, the requirement is for you to be 40 or older because that’s usually the age that they say we should start to get yearly mammograms to make sure and take preventative measures that we don’t have cancer…,” Dukes said.

The pop up will be held at Evans Towne Center Park on May 8th.

“We have information on our page that you can go and check out and you can register and sign up today. We are in need of at least 20 more women to come out and join us– I will be doing my first mammogram, ‘cause I am approaching 40, so I will be doing my first mammogram at this event as well. So, we are participating in this event as well as giving it,” Dukes said.
