Local bakers find a home with the opening of Silva Linings Cheesecakery

COSHOCTON − A home baker who long dreamed of having a brick and mortar storefront has achieved that dream and is helping others do the same.

Silva Linings Cheesecakery recently had a grand opening at 660 Main St., the former home of Coshocton Lab and Muscle Menders. The bakery is on the right side of the building, but there is potential to expand into more of the space.

Owner Kitt Silva said she started making cheesecakes for friends and family years ago. Word of mouth turned her hobby into a business in 2018 while living in Mississippi. Her family moved back to Coshocton in 2021 and Silva continued baking from home, but she always had an eye open for the right storefront.

The bakery is a cooperative with several other bakers and treat-makers. Some of the others include Lori Parrish of Lori's Heavenly Sweets, Morgan Arnold of Morgan's Baked Goods, Lacey Moore of Naturally Delicious and Angie Slaughter of In the Mix. There is a kitchen on site.

The shop will offer everything from brownies and cakes to bread and cocoa bombs. Bakers will also take custom orders ranging from a child's birthday cake to sweet vegan treats. Free coffee is offered to customers and there will be seating on the porch.

"We're just going to have all your favorite baked goods all the time," Silva said. "We can do specialty orders to and pay close attention to your dietary needs."

Silva said she heard a comment a few months ago about her focus on cottage and home bakers, and implying home bakers would never amount to anything.

"Basically, it was why would you put so much focus on these people, because they're never going to have a brick and mortar store. But, a few years ago, that was me too," Silva said. "It was important for me to give these ladies an outlet and to be challenged in baking all the wonderful things they do."

Silva said community feedback has been positive and she's excited to be part of a downtown area on the rise. She grew up in Coshocton in the 1970s and 1980s and there was never a reason to leave town.

"Everything was on Main Street. We had our shoe stores, we had our bakeries, we had all of it right here. To see the growth already here on Main Street, that means more to me than anything," Silva said. "It's about keeping it local and giving people a reason to stay here."
