Local artist took inspiration from cicadas well before incoming invasion

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — THE CICADAS ARE COMING! THE CICADAS ARE COMING!

Ok … You have to think if a cicada could type, they would use all caps.

The Great Cicada Invasion of 2024 will not really stop what we’re doing. But huge chunks of the country will be inundated with emerging cicadas from mid-May to late June.  Experts say trillions could emerge across the country in the biggest “blooming” of cicadas since 1803.

National Record Store Day rolls in big crowd for limited-edition releases

(Granted there weren’t near as many subdivisions for cicadas to annoy back then.)

But one of the coolest perspectives on cicadas comes from Madison Bean.  She was on to cicadas well before it became the trendy tongue-in-cheek apocalyptic nature story of 2024.

Madison had an exhibition which featured dead cicadas, and she says people still send her cicada shells.

She is from a family of artist and like art is supposed to do … Madison’s take on cicadas gives us opportunity to look at them differently.

And like most of us growing up in the South, the cicadas that emerge provided a soundtrack to our playing until the sun went down.

Madison’s art has been on display at UAH and she has future projects planned.  We will keep you posted on when her next exhibition.
