Local artist publishes book to highlight use of art in mental health awareness

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month and Asian American Heritage Month, local artist Jennifer Lee Hester is launching a book called “Letter it Out” to highlight the use of art in mental health awareness.

Hester specializes in lettering, murals and design to foster joy and growth for individuals and businesses.

“Lettering is illustrating letter forms in a stylistic way,” said Hester.

“Letter it Out” is a collection by Baton Rouge artists who share their insecurities and art to inspire others to deal with related struggles.

“We thought it was important to share that because we wanted the reader to find hope and connection, inspiration and encouragement to feel less alone,” said Hester.

Marcus Soniat is one of 10 featured artists whose contributions talk about chasing worth, his journey of looking for validation and how he’s dealt with failures through faith.

The book will be available at the Local Pop Up at the Electric Depot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. The first 20 purchases will get a sticker sheet of all the artwork in the book.

Profits from the book purchase will go to the Forum 225 Community Fridge. The book can be purchased at Local Supply Baton Rouge or online.
