Lizzo’s Performance at the Grammys 2020 Is All You Need to See Right Now
One of the highlights of the 2020 Grammys was, without a doubt, Lizzo’s performance. The singer and rapper, who boasted the most nominations for any artist, opened the show by giving an electric rendition of her hit songs “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts.”
“Tonight is for Kobe,” she said at the beginning of her performance, referring to Kobe Bryant, who died earlier that day (Sunday, January 26) in a helicopter accident. She then went into a soulful, vocally powerful rendition of “Cuz I Love You,” followed by “Truth Hurts.” And yes, the flute made an appearance.
The performance was classic Lizzo: high-energy, magnetic, and just so fun. Unfortunately, the headlines surrounding her lately have been the opposite of those things. The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels came under fire a few weeks back for body-shaming Lizzo, saying her brand and music won’t be “awesome if she gets diabetes.”
If Lizzo’s Grammys performance is any indication, though, she isn’t sweating Michaels’s comments whatsoever.

In an interview with Glamour last year, Lizzo talked about how it frustrates her when people call her “brave.”
“When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No, I’m not,’” she said. “I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy. If you saw Anne Hathaway in a bikini on a billboard, you wouldn’t call her brave. I just think there’s a double standard when it comes to women.”
She continued, “I don’t like it when people think it’s hard for me to see myself as beautiful. I don’t like it when people are shocked that I’m doing it.”
On the topic of the music industry being more inclusive, she also said to Glamour, “Let’s just make space for these women. Make space for me. Make space for this generation of artists who are really fearless in self-love. They’re out here. They want to be free. I think allowing that space to be made is really what’s going to shift the narrative in the future. Let’s stop talking about it and make more space for people who are about it.”
