Lizzo's BET Awards Performance Had Everyone —Including Rihanna— Dancing

Breaking News: Lizzo is still "100 percent" amazing.

Lizzo solidified her spot as a performing powerhouse during her performance of “Truth Hurts” during the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday night.

The performance had the singer — along with her dozen of background dancers — placed atop a giant, tiered wedding cake. Lizzo, who was on the very top of the “cake,” was dressed in a sexy, bridal-inspired lace bodysuit and ruffled skirt, veil and blinged out sunglasses while bright pink bouquets served as makeshift pom poms for the set’s high-energy choreography. And yes, her signature flute playing happened, alongside some twerk time.

The pop singer has had scene-stealing performances before — her vocals alone combined with her high-energy choreography and infectious lyrics have captivated her growing audience over the years. With “Truth Hurts” off her debut studio album Cuz I Love You becoming her first single to break the Billboard Hot 100 however, she’s been able to receive airplay and the press coverage that she deserves. Even Rihanna — who rarely attends awards shows anymore — made sure to grant Lizzo a standing ovation during the performance.

The wedding-themed performance seemed to be loosely inspired by Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” performance from the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards — another performance where a then budding musician confirmed their pop status with an impossible to ignore performance.

If the inspiration was indeed intentional, maybe it was a creative move decided by Lizzo to tell the world that she’s arrived and not only worthy of her current success, but also to tell the music industry, that she’s here to stay.
