At Lizzo's concert in the nation's capital last night, she honored American history. Lizzo became the first and only person to ever play a crystal flute that was owned by former President James Madison. Yes, really: Lizzo played a centuries-old flute at her show last night.

After playing, Lizzo exclaimed, "We just made history tonight! Thank you to the Library of Congress for preserving our history and making history freaking cool! History is freaking cool you guys!"

The collaboration began when the 14th Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, tweeted at Lizzo about the Library's more than 1,800 flutes. "we would love for you to come see it and even play a couple when you are in DC next week. Like your song they are 'Good as hell,'" Hayden wrote on Twitter.

Lizzo quickly tweeted back in all caps, "IM COMING CARLA! AND IM PLAYIN THAT CRYSTAL FLUTE!!!!!"

This flute was made by Claude Laurent in Paris in 1813, according to the Washington Post, and gifted to James Madison.

"Mr. President, I took the liberty of sending to you about three years ago, a crystal flute of my invention," Laurent wrote to the U.S. president. "Please allow me to express to you the desire that I would have to learn if it has reached you and if this feeble homage of my industry has been agreeable to you. I beg you to please accept the homage of the most distinguished respect with which I have the honor of being, Mr. President, your very humble and obedient."

On Monday, Lizzo visited the Library and played several flutes in the collection. (See photos from her visit on the Library of Congress's blog.)

Carol Lynn Ward-Bamford, the curator for the flute collection, brought the historic flute to the Lizzo show at D.C.'s Capitol One Arena, accompanied by security.

After the concert ended, Lizzo wrote on her Instagram (in caps, again), "IM THE FIRST & ONLY PERSON TO PLAY THIS PRESIDENTIAL CRYSTAL FLUTE ITS LITERALLY AN HEIRLOOM— LIKE… AS A FLUTE PLAYER THIS IS ICONIC AND I WILL NEVER BE OVER IT."
