Lizzo Bravely Opens Up About ‘Hurtful’ Comments from Internet Trolls in Emotional New Video on IG
After the recent drop of her new single, “Rumors,” Lizzo should be on cloud nine. However, unwanted comments from internet users have made the last few days quite difficult for the 33-year-old musician. Now, she’s speaking out.
On Sunday, the “Good As Hell” singer shared a tearful video on her personal Instagram account, where she broke down about individuals’ “hurtful” words.
“People who have something mean to say about you, and for the most part it doesn't hurt my feelings, I don't care,” Lizzo said in the clip, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I just think when I'm working this hard, my tolerance gets lower, my patience is lower. I'm more sensitive, and it gets to me.”
In the 12-minute video, which has since been deleted, Lizzo explained that it’s not about people not liking her music, it’s the attack on her appearance that she struggles with.
“People saying sh** about me that just doesn’t even make sense. It’s fat-phobic, it’s racist, and it’s hurtful,” she said. “I’m not making music for anybody. I’m a Black woman making music. I make Black music, period. I’m not serving anyone but myself. Everyone is invited to a Lizzo show, to a Lizzo song. To this good energy. Everyone is invited.”
In the end, the pop star won’t settle for this kind of treatment for herself or others who look like her. Lizzo continued, “What I won't accept is y'all doing this to Black women over and over and over again, especially us big Black girls. When we don't fit into the box that you want to put us in, you just unleash hatred onto us. It's not cool. I'm doing this sh** for the big Black women in the future who just want to live their lives without being scrutinized or put into boxes.”
