A Lizzie McGuire Writer Spills Details About the Canceled Reboot—Including Whether Lizzie and Gordo Were Endgame

It's been three years since the Lizzie McGuire reboot was unceremoniously canceled before it could see the light of day, and we finally know what Miss Lizzie (Hilary Duff) got up to in her 30s.

Over on TikTok, Lizzie McGuire reboot staff writer Jonathan Hurwitz revealed details from the first three scripts, which Disney had allegedly decided were not “PG” enough for their audience. “I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating,” Duff wrote on Instagram in February 2020. “It’s important to me that just as [Lizzie’s] experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable.”

Before diving into specific plot points, Hurwitz confirmed previous reports that the series would kick off in New York, with adult Lizzie discovering that her “very handsome chef” boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend. Based on Hurwitz's breakdown of the pilot episode, this discovery would lead her to her return to her childhood bedroom in California, where her animated self was waiting for her. Before you ask, the best friend in question was not Miranda (Lalaine).

Here's everything else we learned about the Lizzie McGuire reboot from Hurwitz (so far).

Were Lizzie and Gordo endgame?

The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003) concluded with best friends Lizzie and Gordo (Adam Lamberg) kissing on the roof of their Italian hotel. However, the reboot writers did not plan to revisit their romantic relationship.

“You would have gotten an answer to that in episode two,” Hurwitz explained in part three of this TikTok series. “Lizzie meets up with Gordo—who she's just kind of been in touch with via text over the years, occasionally—and they meet up and Gordo reveals that he is engaged to a woman and she's pregnant and they're really happy. So no, in this version, Lizzie and Gordon would not have ended up together.”

What about Ethan Craft?

Here's where things get less family-friendly. “Episode two ends with Lizzie getting a text from Ethan Craft, and little animated Lizzie faints,” Hurwitz continued. Ethan Craft (Clayton Snyder) was the object of Lizzie's desire for the bulk of the original series and, to this day, has TV's most iconic hair care routine, in my humble opinion.

According to the writer, episode three, which was not filmed but had been scripted, would have picked up with Lizzie waking up in Ethan's bed wearing his water polo shirt. Meanwhile, animated Lizzie is there with a little to-do list with Ethan's name on it. “I think she says something like, ‘Well, checked that box,’” Hurwitz recalled. “Dramatic pause…‘Twice.’”

(Though Hurwitz says that nothing sexual is depicted, he believes this joke was “probably” one of the moments Disney “wasn't comfortable” including.)

Though Ethan wants to see Lizzie again, she tells him she's going back to New York.

Spoiler alert: She (probably) doesn’t go back to New York.

On her way home from Ethan's house, Lizzie ends up sharing an Uber to the airport with a gay guy named Carson who's “loosely based” on Hurwitz. “He's from Indiana and he's obsessed with snacks from the '90s and they end up spending the day together and have just had like a really great, great time together,” Hurwitz explained in part four of his ongoing series.

Long story short, Lizzie's ex Emmett has been tracking her phone and sends a 30th-birthday cake to her house (creepy), which she ends up bringing over to Carson's apartment.

“He's hanging out with his quirky neighbor—her name is Suze,” Hurwitz said. “The three of them end up talking and laughing and playing games just having a really good time. And at the end of the night, Carson asks if Lizzie wants to move into the empty room in his apartment. And so the episode ends with her kind of, like, seriously considering not going back to New York so she can rebuild a life in California.”

Her life in New York was very Devil Wears Prada.

Because episode one ends with Lizzie returning to her childhood home, we would have seen what her life in New York was like in the pilot—and it's very Devil Wears Prada. However, instead of working for a major magazine, she's the assistant to an interior designer named Damian who is getting his own New York magazine profile.

“So Lizzie has gone out to find some last-minute touches for the apartment, including this fluffy adorable alpaca that Damian thinks is a llama,” Hurwitz said. “He insists that she get rid of it, but New York magazine ends up putting it front and center in the photo shoot and it's a huge, huge hit. And Lizzie asked to be credited in the magazine, but Damian says no and Lizzie finally realizes that she's never going to grow after working for this guy for five years. So she ends up quitting.”

Yes, they really were going to sing that song from the musical A Chorus Line.

Hurwitz confirmed that part of the song “Dance Ten, Looks Three” from A Chorus Line would be sung in episode two, but that the “tits and ass” lyrics were replaced with “other parts of the song that are a little bit more PG.”

Even Lizzie succumbs to breakup bangs.

“In episode two, after Lizzie's come home and she's heartbroken and emotional, she does what anybody would do in that situation, which is put on Ariana Grande and give herself bangs,” Hurwitz said.
