Little Sleepies recalls nearly 500,000 baby bibs and blankets due to possible choking hazard

Little Sleepies has issued a voluntary recall of more than 450,000 baby bibs and loveys after receiving two reports from customers that the care instruction tags on the products can detach, posing a potential choking hazard for babies and young children.

No injuries have been reported, the company notes, but out of an abundance of caution, they have opted to recall nearly half a million of their Sleepyhead Loveys and Bandana Bibs, in partnership with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Little Sleepies’ Sleepyhead Loveys are meant to be used by babies and toddlers as a security blanket, while Bandana Bibs are intended to be worn by babies during meals to protect clothing, as well as for drooling or teething babies and toddlers. The products come in a variety of patterns, and range in price between $12 and $48.

Customers who purchased the blankets and bibs between Feb. 23, 2021 and Sept. 6, 2023 are eligible for a refund from Little Sleepies, but the company also notes that the care instructions label can simply be removed at home and then the bibs and loveys can continue to be used with adult supervision. They are not offering a product replacement for the recall.

What to know about the Little Sleepies recall

If you currently have one of the Sleepyhead Loveys or Bandana Bibs affected by the recall, here are the next steps to take.

  1. Immediately remove the care instruction label to eliminate the potential hazard. The company recommends using scissors and cutting the care instruction label close to the seam.

  2. Once the care instruction label is removed, you can resume use of the product, which Little Sleepies continues to recommend be used under adult supervision.

  3. Alternatively, you may return your Sleepyhead Lovey and/or Bandana Bib to the company with the care instruction label intact, using a prepaid shipping label, for a refund. They’ve set up an online return process available for customers interested in getting a refund. Note that it may take up to 12 weeks for the warehouse to process returns after the product arrives back at the warehouse, the company states.

Little Sleepies is working to redesign the label so that it’s not a safety issue in the future. “We understand that you love these products which is why we’re taking the time and care to redesign the care instruction label so it meets our quality standards. We will keep our community posted on when they are due to return,” the company states on their website.
