The Little Mermaid Live: Everything We Know So Far

Hold on to your fins, Disney lovers: Another Little Mermaid live-action adaptation is coming.

That's right: In addition to the movie in the works, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, ABC announced yesterday, August 5, that it's moving forward with The Little Mermaid Live, which will air November 5. The Little Mermaid Live is just one of several live musicals to hit TV in recent years. (Remember Grease Live? Rent Live? Or The Sound of Music Live from 2013 starring Carrie Underwood?) Not much is known about this upcoming special, but a few details did come out yesterday after the announcement. Here's everything we know so far:

The release date: November 5, 2019.

The cast: Moana's Auli’i Cravalho will star as Ariel; Queen Latifah is set to play Ursula; and Shaggy will portray Sebastian. Other characters haven't been announced yet.

Queen Latifah commented on her casting via Instagram, writing, “Fortunately I know a little magic.” 😘 Excited to be a part of The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!"

The format: Per Deadline, The Little Mermaid Live will be a blend of puppetry, animation, and live-action elements. The cast will perform live versions of songs from The Little Mermaid mixed in with a broadcast of the original 1989 film. About 10 live musical elements are planned, according to Hamish Hamilton, the director and executive producer of The Little Mermaid Live. Expect gorgeous sets and costumes.

This will not conflict with the live-action movie version. ABC president of entertainment Karey Burke says The Little Mermaid Live is "distinctly different from the feature film."

If The Little Mermaid Live goes well, expect more live events on ABC. "If it works, I expect we will do more of them and we will work closely with the feature department about timing," Burke says, per Deadline.

We'll update this post with more information as it comes in.
