The Little Gold Men Team Predicts the Oscars: Part 2

One year after the most surprising Oscar upset in a decade, announced as part of the the biggest gaffe in Oscar history, it’s hard for anyone to say with confidence that they really know what the Academy looks for in a best-picture winner. The makeup of the Academy voting body has changed immensely in recent years; movements like #OscarsSoWhite and #MeToo, while maybe not as powerful with Hollywood insiders as on social media, have had a notable impact. And the notion of what an “Oscar movie” is has changed as well; the Academy that voted for Driving Miss Daisy no longer exists, and for that matter, neither does the one that voted for No Country for Old Men.

On top of everything, or maybe because of all of this, the 2017 Oscar race has been incredibly difficult to predict all along, and remains that way even days before the ceremony. On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, the team of Mike Hogan, Richard Lawson, Joanna Robinson, and Katey Rich share the second half of their Oscar picks, from the documentary category (could the charming Faces Places win it all, and save humanity in the process?) to the surprisingly fraught original screenplay category to, yes, the best-picture race, where everyone manages to surprise each other with their picks. For a detailed explanation of why the best-picture voting process is more complicated than all of the others, make sure and listen to our earlier episode with special guest Daniel Joyaux.

Listen to the episode above, and keep an eye out on Monday for a special bonus post-Oscars edition of the podcast. You can also subscribe to Little Gold Men on Apple Podcasts, where ratings and reviews are always appreciated.
