Liquor store clerk broke news of Patrick Mahomes' record extension before anyone else knew

If you wanted to know about Patrick Mahomes’ insane contract extension before anyone else, you should have been following Katie Camlin.

Camlin isn’t one of the latest reporters on the NFL beat. She was just doing her job at Plaza Liquor in Kansas City when she broke news of a deal that turns out to be the first half-billion dollar contract in pro sports.

Camlin, who is clearly a Kansas City Chiefs fan based on her Twitter feed, was working when a Chiefs front-office employee came in looking for some Dom Pérignon a little after noon on Monday. It was to celebrate a big signing that wouldn’t be reported by anyone else for a couple hours.

News of Mahomes deal came from unlikely source

Camlin’s initial post was deleted because she was nervous that she did something wrong, the Kansas City Star said. But there were screenshots.

This isn’t the kind of story anyone in Kansas City would object to. Mahomes is the king of the city after bringing home a Super Bowl LIV championship. His new deal runs through 2031.

Hours later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first in the traditional media to break the news and Camlin tweeted, “Holy sh-- I beat Schefter hahaha.”

Clerk gets a lot of unexpected attention

There was a lot of attention for Camlin after she had an unexpected in with the biggest story in sports on Monday, and she said going viral made her anxious. But while she was getting the attention, she was a good company woman and plugged the store.

So there you go. It actually fits pretty well that a big Chiefs fan randomly had news of Mahomes’ deal long before anyone else knew a thing about it.
