Lindsey Vonn Voted Into U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame

When Lindsey Vonn, 37, retired from ski racing in 2019, she decided enough was enough. While her goal of becoming the most successful ski racer in history by besting Ingemar Stenmark's World Cup victory record ultimately eluded her, she knew she had left her mark on the ski racing world. Today she can rest easy knowing she's joining the ranks of sports legends in the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame.

Vonn is one of eight individuals named to the Hall of Fame Class of 2022, including fellow paralympic skiers Muffy Davis and David Kiley, and the first American ski racer to win an Olympic gold in 1948, Gretchen Fraser. The rest of this year's inductees come from other sports and include swimming stars Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin, and Trisha Zorn-Hudson (para swimming), as well as figure skater Michelle Kwan, soccer icon Mia Hamm, and track and field legend Roger Kingdom.

Besides individuals, entire teams, coaches, and special contributors are also eligible to be nominated to the Hall of Fame. This year's team inductees are the 1976 Women's 4×100 Freestyle Relay Swimming Team and the 2002 Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, while basketball coach Pat Summit and tennis icon Billie Jean King also join the honor roll as bonafide sports legends--the first women to be nominated in the coach and special contributor categories, respectively.

Combined, the class of 2022 has represented the United States as athletes at 27 Olympic and Paralympic Games, tallying 129 medals, including 86 golds. Vonn accounts for four of those Olympics (2002, 2006, 2010, 2018) and three Olympic medals, including one gold in the downhill at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee have been honoring athletes since 1983, but it does not add to the Hall of Fame every year. The Class of 2022 is the 17th class to be inducted and the first since 2019. The last induction prior to that was in 2012, leaving a long list of worthy candidates to be considered.

Alpine skiing stars Bode Miller and Julia Mancuso were also among this year's finalists but were not selected in the final voting round by fellow Olympic and Paralympic athletes, family members, and the 432,000 fans who voted online.

The Class of 2022 will be inducted during a ceremony set for Friday, June 24 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo.
