'Lincoln Lawyer' Fans Anxiously Await News of a Season 3

In the age of infinite TV, it sometimes feels like no one is watching the same thing, but The Lincoln Lawyer is one of the streaming era’s certified smash hits. After the first half of Season 2 premiered in July 2023, The Lincoln Lawyer quickly became Netflix’s most viewed series of the week, knocking The Witcher Season 3 (Henry Cavill’s last as Geralt of Rivia) from the top spot.
Based on Michael Connelly’s book series, The Lincoln Lawyer follows criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. The show is relatively traditional by 2023 TV standards, but that old-school legal drama formula is one reason it’s been a huge hit with audiences.
“I think it’s a redemption story,” showrunner Ted Humphrey told The New York Times in August 2023. “You meet Mickey Haller in Season 1 and he is a broken man who’s lost everything, who has been humbled by a drug addiction. The show, to some extent, is about his journey not just back but beyond, and it’s also about him coming to terms with who he is: this child of privilege on one side and an immigrant mother on the other side.”
While Netflix hasn’t officially renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for Season 3, it certainly seems likely they will. Humphrey has said that writers were working on new episodes before the WGA strike began in May 2023. “We had to shut down our writers’ room for Season 3 when the Writers Guild contract expired,” he told NYT. “The issues are real and have to be resolved, and the only way that’s going to happen is by the companies sitting back down with us to make a fair deal. Hopefully that happens soon, and once it does, we will be back to work on a third season.”

What is The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 about?
Netflix hasn’t renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for a third season yet, but new episodes would likely be based on another novel in Michael Connelly’s series of the same name. Each book follows criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller, a recovering addict who works out of the back of his Lincoln Navigator.

Which Lincoln Lawyer book is Season 3 based on?
It’s not yet known which book will provide the inspiration for a potential Season 3, but there are two that definitely aren’t in the running: The Brass Verdict, which inspired Season 1, and The Fifth Witness, which inspired Season 2. In a July 2023 interview with Today, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo said a third season would be based on the fifth book, The Gods of Guilt. (The first book in the series, also titled The Lincoln Lawyer, was adapted into the 2011 film of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey.)
In the book universe, Mickey Haller is the half-brother of Michael Connelly’s other famous character Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, but that is not the case in the streaming world because Amazon—not Netflix—holds the rights to the Bosch books. (Bosch the show had seven seasons on Prime Video; a spinoff called Bosch: Legacy premiered on Freevee in 2022 and has been renewed for Seasons 2 and 3.)

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller
As the titular Lincoln Lawyer, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo would definitely be back as Mickey Haller. Before making his debut as Mickey, Garcia-Rulfo starred in Goliath and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. In early 2023, he played Tommy in the Tom Hanks vehicle A Man Called Otto.
Neve Campbell as Maggie McPherson

Angus Sampson as Dennis “Cisco” Wojciechowski

Angus Sampson stays booked and busy, starring in Our Flag Means Death and Reservation Dogs in 2022 while also appearing in Season 1 of The Lincoln Lawyer. In 2024, he’s set to appear in Furiosa, reprising his role as The Organic Mechanic from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
Other potential Season 3 cast members include Angélica María, who played Mickey’s mother, Elena, in Season 2, and Elliott Gould, who appeared as Mickey’s mentor, David “Legal” Siegel, in Season 1.
