A New Trailer for the Hamilton Movie Teases the Show's Most Iconic Moments

From Town & Country

In certain circles, revealing that you saw Hamilton with its original Broadway cast is something of a bragging right, a confirmation that you knew about the musical before it blew up.

But "sooner rather than later" everyone will be able to claim they saw Lin Manuel Miranda himself play the titular founding father because a movie featuring footage of said original cast is heading to Disney Plus on July 3.

"What I'm most excited about [is] you all have that friend that is like, 'I saw it with the original cast.' We're stealing that brag from everyone because you're all going to see it with the original cast," Miranda told Variety back in February. "We're just trying to find the right time to do it."

Originally the film had been planned to premiere in theaters on October 15, 2021, but given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the date shifted.

“I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down," Miranda said. "I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Here's what we know about the film so far.

The Format

Unlike the film adaptation of Miranda's first Tony Award-winning hit In the Heights, which is being directed by Jon M. Chu, the Hamilton movie will feature footage of the actors performing their roles on stage.

"Hamilton director Thomas Kail filmed the stage show before the original Broadway cast members began to depart," reports Variety.

As Miranda mentioned at Sundance this year, the film will feature Hamilton's original cast. Think: Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica, Phillipa Soo as Eliza, Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, the list goes on.

The Premiere Date

In 2018, the Wall Street Journal first reported on news of a Hamilton movie, and suggested that it would not premiere "until 2020 or 2021" at the earliest to allow for sufficient time in which it can only be see on stage.

At the time, the Journal also noted that the film would be "an exact replica of the Broadway production, including an intermission."

And in February of 2020, Walt Disney Studios confirmed that the movie would hit theaters on October 15, 2021.

But now, because of the coronavirus pandemic, they moved up the premiere date. It will hit Disney+ over 4th of July weekend.
