Despite being born in 1999, Lily-Rose Depp wears Y2K trends like someone who watched The OC weekly in 2003.

For example, the 24-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis was just spotted out in an elevated version of the Hollister halter top suburban millennials hid under their sweaters to sneak out to the party in Jake’s basement. She paired her backless black top with a pair of dangerously low-rise jeans and the ultimate Y2K baddie accessory: the whale tail.

Except the Idol star didn’t flash her thong (no pub intended) as if she was attempting to hop on a recycled trend. Instead her black underwear feels exposed as if it’s just the inevitable result of wearing oversized baggy denim without a belt. Her silver ballet flats, boho bag, and white scrunchy only added to her effortless aesthetic.

Remove the iPhone gripped in Depp’s hand, and this photo is like opening a time capsule. I can hear Phantom Planet playing softly in the background. I can smell Fierce for Men by Abercrombie & Fitch in the air.

I shouldn’t be surprised by her accuracy. Earlier this month Lily-Rose Depp was spotted outside of Erehwon wearing the same mall-girl ’fit that defined early-aughts style, give or take a Happy Bunny graphic T-shirt. At the time she paired an olive green cargo miniskirt with a white baby tee, bringing the look into 2024 with her loafers, skinny baguette tote, and slicked back ponytail.

I hate to admit it, but many early-aughts girlies would have finished this look off with Birkenstocks and a chunk of their hair pinned back in a bump, no matter how many crisscrossed bobby pins it took to achieve (IYKYK). I think we can all agree this is an improvement.
