Lili Reinhart Trolled Fans By Joking That She Broke Up With Cole Sprouse

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, providing rest, relaxation and time spent enjoying the last days of summer, and even some of the Riverdale cast got to take a few days off to hang out together and cause a little drama — between beloved couple Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse.

Camila Mendes posted a cute pic of herself and a few castmates on a boat, including Cole and Charles Melton. “Labor day getaway,” she captioned the pic, and we have to be honest: this getaway looks way better than what we did for the holiday weekend.

Cami’s costar KJ Apa, who never misses a chance for an Instagram troll, was noticeably absent from the pic, but he hopped into the comments section to stir up trouble anyway. “Omg …” he wrote, playing the role of Internet Detective. “Cole’s not sitting next to Lili.” Lili herself jumped into the comment fray, too, replying to KJ with, “They must’ve broken up.” (She even added a magnifying glass for good measure.)

Their exchange is a not-so-subtle dig at the intense speculation around Lili and Cole's reported romantic relationship from both media and fans on Instagram. Lili has previously spoken about her right to privacy regarding her personal life. In 2017, she told Harpers Bazaar, "I'm not okay talking about my relationship. I'm not going to tell you my love story. That's just not appropriate right now."

Lili and KJ's exchange is a funny roast of people who scrutinize her relationships, but it also makes an important point about not speculating wildly whenever a celeb posts a photo. The Riverdale cast is obviously clued in to the fact that fans dedicate a lot of time theorizing about what’s going on both on screen and off. But while it’s totally normal to support and love the cast of a TV show you adore, Lili's comment is a good reminder that their relationships and romances are none of our business.
