The Light Within: God’s blessings come from the light within us

Most of us probably prefer light over darkness in enjoying life. And, it’s clear from the Bible that mental light is much greater than mental darkness.

In Matthew, Christ Jesus said, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light” (6:22).

I believe he was confirming that if we turn our mental sight (thoughts) to God we can experience spiritual light (God’s presence) in the body, including love, charity, peace, health, strength and confidence, among other God-like qualities. And, “…the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory” (Isaiah 60:19).

This everlasting light from God is emphasized by Paul to enable us to meet daily challenges: “…let us put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12). Life’s difficulties can be met with this power from within that meets our and others’ needs. And, this everlasting light can bring our thought to Christ Jesus’ promise: “… lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world …” (Matthew 28:20).

Jesus expressed, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

I don’t believe that Christ Jesus was suggesting that we should be self-serving or seeking personal praise for our “good works,” but that our “light” be compassion and reaching out to others, particularly those in need.

May we pray to God for opportunities to improve ourselves and the lives of others with that wonderful “light within,” then give glory to God for enabling us to do so.
