Light and Airy Master Suite Makeover

This Decatur, Georgia home's master suite had a few functional hiccups to remedy: the hall to the bathroom was a jumble of swing-out doors that clogged traffic flow, and a rarely used tub gobbled up space. With help from a designer, the beige box of a bedroom needed only cosmetic changes to become the restful retreat the homeowner always wanted.

Before: Beige Box
Beige carpet and beige bedding brought this room no life. An accent chair with great potential got lost in the drab decor.
After: Shades of Blue
A wall of horizontal pine planks lends some much-needed architectural character to this once-bland bedroom and directs eyes toward its tall ceiling. White brightens walls and shifts attention to blue accessories. These layers of blue range from indigo to aqua to a barely there smoky gray. A tufted navy headboard serves as an anchor for lighter blue hues.

Vanity Power
A heather-gray quilt, aqua chenille throw, and pillows with embroidered motifs provide subtle color shifts and layers of texture that energize the bed without overwhelming it. A new gray desk and plush chair update the look of this makeup vanity. Trading artwork for a mirror and adding a pair of skinny lamps make the spot work harder.

Before: Tight Fit
A heavy light fixture and mirrored panel outdated the space and made the room feel smaller. The tub and vanity butted up against each other, making everything feel tight.
After: Room to Breathe

The new vanity looks custom, but it's not. The homeowner found it in the perfect sky blue at Home Decorators then dressed it up with polished-nickel faucets and hardware. Smaller, individual sconces bring less heft to the wall, and the mirrors look clean and modern.
Before: Appliance Line-up
Removing the space-hogging tub meant they could enlarge the shower and spread everything else out along the newly-found wall space. Replacing floor tiles with linoleum brightens the space and gives a more natural feel.
After: Shiplap Charm
Removing the tub turned the oversize window into a focal point. A glass shower enclosure reveals a wall of shiny subway tile enhanced by limestone and marble tiles in a chevron mosaic on the floor and niche. Fabric shades offer privacy without blocking sunlight.
Barn Door Blues
New linoleum flooring in the hall looks like wood for a fraction of the cost and is easier to maintain. The homeowner solved the traffic jam by installing a pocket door in the bathroom and sliding barn doors on the closets. A geometric light fixture brings attention to the lofted ceiling.
