Lifeguard Challenge to educate, recruit for upcoming season
Apr. 22—The Vigo County YMCA will host its inaugural Lifeguard Challenge event, designed to recruit lifeguards for the upcoming summer season.
In partnership with the Vigo County School Corp. Aquatic Center and Terre Haute Parks and Recreation, this event aims to not only staff the facilities but also to promote awareness of the role lifeguards play in ensuring public safety, according to a release.
An informational event is set for 1 to 3 p.m. April 27 at the Vigo County YMCA.
The Lifeguard Challenge event offers an opportunity for individuals to gain a deeper understanding of the duties and responsibilities associated with lifeguarding. Participants will have the chance to undergo a prerequisite challenge, allowing them to assess their suitability for this role.
In addition to the challenge, attendees will learn about the lifeguard certification program offered by the American Red Cross. For a fee of $185, individuals can enroll in lifeguard classes, which include training in lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer. Successful completion of the program results in a two-year certification, equipping lifeguards with the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to emergencies.
