Colonel Crawford grad awarded full-tuition scholarship

Abbigail Martin, incoming student at Bluffton University, has been awarded one of the university’s full-tuition Presidential Scholarship, valued at nearly $140,000 for four years.

Martin, of Bucyrus, is the daughter of W. Todd and Heather Martin and graduated from Colonel Crawford High School this year. She has been active in Leo Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, Young Life, Leadership Ambassador, and Project B.L.A.C.K. She has played club volleyball and participated in USA Swimming. Abby is also a four-year varsity volleyball player and four-year varsity swim member. She earned All-Ohio honors in swimming her senior year and was the school's fourth swimmer to qualify for the state meet all four years of high school.

Martin plans to study graphic design. She was also awarded the Bluffton University Art Scholarship based on her submitted portfolio.

The bi-annual Presidential Scholarship competition brings numerous high-achieving high school seniors to campus each year to write an essay in response to a faculty lecture and previously assigned readings. Invited students had either a 3.75 grade point average or at least a 3.5 grade point average and a composite score of at least 24 on the ACT or 1160 on the SAT.

All students who participated in the competitions and choose to attend Bluffton in fall 2023 will receive a $1,000 annual scholarship.

Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center welcomes new director of community schools

MANSFIELD — David Jones has been appointed the new director of community schools by the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center (MOESC) Board of Governors. Jones has a bachelor's degree in computer engineering and a master's in nonprofit administration. He has 17 years of technology directing and related experience. He is currently employed through Franklin County, and will be starting at MOESC on Aug. 1.

As the director of community schools, Jones will provide oversight, strategic direction and guidance of Mid-OhioEducational Service Center’s sponsored community schools and will monitor the schools' operation and compliance with all applicable laws, policies/procedures and contract terms as required by the Ohio Department of Education.

Jones will be working with MOESC Sponsor Liaison Jim Smith over the next school year to ensure a smooth transition in two MOESC-sponsored schools, GOAL Digital Academy and Tomorrow Center. Smith will be retiring at the end of the 2023-2024 school year after serving in this role for the past decade.

Area singers invited to be part of Assumption choir

CAREY — The Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey invites area singers to join the 2023 Assumption choir. This choir, along with a brass quintet, will lead the music for the Vigil Mass of the Assumption, in the Shrine Park, at 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. This unique experience gives singers, amateur and professional, the opportunity to sing a wide variety of music with a short-term commitment.

Rehearsals will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Original Shrine Church (next to the gift shop) on Sundays — July 30, Aug. 6 and Aug. 13. Please direct any questions to the Basilica’s director of music ministries, Anthony Gallina, at music@olcshrine.com or 419-396-7107, ext. 104.
