Each week, Stella's Laura Powell chats to them about their lives, childhoods, careers, and pauses to discuss the three books that shaped them.
We start the new series with a big one: Louis de Bernières, best known for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, the epic wartime romance he wrote 25 years ago, which was turned into a film starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz.
In this episode, Louis opens up about losing his faith after a traumatic incident on a train in Colombia. He also discusses the downsides of fame, a memorable encounter with Sir Salman Rushdie at a party, and he talks for the first time about his experience of childhood abuse at school.
He also discusses his new novel, So Much Life Left Over, following a family in the 1920s as they attempt to put the trauma of the First World War behind them and start a new life.
