'I don't need a second series, I just want a better ending': Liar divides fans as ITV announces series 2
Despite an underwhelming reaction from fans to its finale last night, Liar will return to screens with a second series, ITV has confirmed.
Curiously, ITV has announced that Ioan Gruffudd will be joining Joanne Froggatt upon the show's return... despite last night's finale ending with a close-up shot of his character, rapist surgeon Andrew Earlham, looking mightily dead with his throat cut.
In response, fans have began to speculate just how a second series will deal with Andrew's apparent demise, or whether Liar will soon take a dip into the supernatural...
How is #Liar going to return is Andrew is dead? Will it be like a prequel? Finding out who killed him? Baffled

Is Andrew going to be a ghost in season 2? #Liar

Others have suggested that Andrew's death may have been an elaborate set-up to frame Froggatt's character Laura. Or that he could have faked his death – though that seems ever so slightly implausible.
I reckon Andrew Earlham's faked his own death and this isn't really over. He's an experienced surgeon, he'll be back in Series 2. #Liar

... plot twist, Andrew has killed himself and left evidence so that Laura gets accused of his murder #liar

Despite the theories, the overwhelming response to Liar's ending has been negative, with fans angered that the series didn't climax with Andrew getting his just desserts, and others expressing annoyance that a high-profile TV mystery once again ended in something of a damp squib.
I feel cheated! I don't need a second series, I just want a better ending. #Liar

#Liar S2. Biggest waste of time whodunnit ever. Who cares who killed vile rapist Andrew Earlham? Would've preferred to see him in court.

While Liar will return for a second series, we won't be able to see it for quite a while. ITV has confirmed the series won't even begin filming until January 2019. Writers Jack and Harry Williams have also referred to series two as the show's "final chapter" in a statement, adding that they "can't wait to be reunited with the brilliant Joanne and Ioan."
