Liane Lippert (Movistar) defended her title in the elite women's road race Saturday for a third national crown at the German Road Championships. Kathrin Hammes (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) rode solo 1:07 back for second place in Bad Dürrheim.

In the three-way sprint for the final spot on the podium, Romy Kasper (AG Insurance-Soudal QuickStep) secured third in front of Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon-SRAM) and Clara Koppenburg (Cofidis), who was third in the time trial on Friday.

Once five of the eight finish circuits of the 26.7km had been completed, a group of 15 had ridden away at the front of the race. From that group seven remained with two to go, Lippert riding with Koppenburg, Hammes, Kasper, Lea Lin Teutenberg (Ceratizit-WNT) and Canyon-SRAM duo Bauernfeind and Antonia Niedermaier.

On the final circuit, Lippert launched her decisive attack, quickly putting in a 35-second gap to the now six chasers. She charged up the Ōfingen climb for an eighth and final time and extended her lead to more than 1:15.

Behind her, Hammes accelerated away for a solo effort a few kilometres from the finish and drove away to the silver medal.
