From ELLE

Liam Hemsworth apparently didn't expect his and Miley Cyrus' private separation to become public when it did, according to Page Six. Multiple sources report that Hemsworth learned about Cyrus' rep's statement announcing the two were taking a break from their marriage on social media. He was in Australia at the time it was released.

Multiple sources close to Hemsworth described him as "blindsided" by it to the outlet.

Cyrus' rep, for context, said on August 10, “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

A source told Page Six that privately, Hemsworth and Cyrus had already been separated for months, during which they were both photographed without their wedding rings on. A source close to Cyrus denied the Hemsworth sources' claim that he was taken by surprise.

Sources close to Hemsworth said he hadn't been ready to announce their separation then and that he had privately been working to save the marriage. Sources close to Cyrus have said that she was fighting for the marriage too, up until the same week Hemsworth filed for divorce.

Hemsworth has remained in Australia with his family since the split news became public. Cyrus has returned to Los Angeles after her Italy vacation, where she was when the split was announced. She has remained romantically involved with Kaitlynn Carter, who she was photographed kissing on vacation right before her rep announced her and Hemsworth's separation.
