Letter: As they ponder open carry, S.C. lawmakers seem unconcerned about gun violence

Couldn’t watch the news the other today - another shooting with several killed and others maimed. I wonder if others are as worried about what’s happening in our society as me. What kind of world are our grandchildren going to experience? Where can anyone feel truly safe these days?

I seriously question whether our representatives in Columbia are alarmed at all about this epidemic of gun violence. It appears that most are distracted by other topics on their social agenda, such as abortion, book bans and action against the LBGTQ+ community, along with an effort to allow open carry without training or a permit.

As we anticipate another election cycle in 2024, we will have the opportunity to change direction. Do we continue to be dragged through the mud of fear, hate and prejudice? Or do we stand for justice, tolerance, freedom and equality?

The saying that “elections have consequences” has never been as true as today, including for ours in Columbia. A good example is the so-called “constitutional carry” bill or permitless carry bill that passed the House in February. If passed by the full Senate, will you feel safe knowing the person at the checkout line at the store or the next table at a restaurant is openly carrying a weapon?
