Let's Talk Derby with Kathryn & Kirby: How to make a mint julep for the Kentucky Derby

For more than a century, Kentucky Derby racegoers have consumed mint juleps at historic Churchill Downs Racetrack.

The mint julep, made with bourbon, mint and simple syrup, is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. We stopped by the Brown Hotel for our "Let's Talk Derby with Kathryn & Kirby" video series to learn more about the boozy beverage, with some help from Chad Perkins and Sara Ahlgrim with whiskeyambitions.com.

One of the keys to making a tasty mint julep is serving it with fresh mint, particularly as a garnish in your julep cup.

"We want the aromatics. When you go to drink it, you want to get that mint right up there," Ahlgrim said.
