Let‘s All Be Honest With Ourselves and Admit the Jonas Brothers Peaked in 2007

From Cosmopolitan

It is a blessed time, my friends, because the Jonas Brothers are fully on their comeback tour, including a pit stop at the VMAs tonight! Consider it their official foray into this half of the decade, if you will.

After taking a six-year hiatus and making fans wait in anticipation after reactivating their social media accounts and announcing that their sh*t was finally together, the Jonases are taking another stab at the family band thing. And we’re forever grateful, honestly. But as I sift through old JoBros merch, gearing up to sit in mid-tier seating at one of their several sold-out shows this year, I can’t help but pull a Ryan Sheckler and think of when things were different. When it was a happier time. When The Jonas Brothers peaked in 2007.

You might be thinking, “WTF? You’re clearly on one and just trying to nitpick these musical geniuses.” But I assure you, I would never do anything of the sort. With 12 years as a JoBros girl under my belt, I wish these dudes nothing but the best. But I can’t stop thinking about how 2007 was their best year ever for a number of reasons!

Their Album!

When I received my first laptop for Christmas in 2007 and did a deep dive on my favorite Radio Disney artists, I discovered their self-titled album and previous discography. Which didn’t run very deep, with one punk-inspired album called It’s About Time and a gospel-y solo album by Nicholas Jerry Jonas. Regardless, I instantly saw the brothers’ evolution taking shape.

This was the beginning of their Disney-fication and in some ways a detour from their initial vision for their career, but Jonas Brothers hit at the perfect time and blended their punk-lite style and new pop star status more seamlessly than their following records. (For the record: All JoBros albums are great albums.)

This album included hits like “S.O.S” (the brothers’ first top 20 song on the Hot 100 charts), “Inseparable” (number 18 on Cosmopolitan’s definitive JoBros song ranking), and a solid cover of “Year 3000.” They even had one called “When You Look Me in the Eyes,” an objectively great song that managed to convince the brothers’ harshest critics (i.e., kids in my high school who just didn’t get ~it~) that they had major skills.

Not all albums have songs that make the haters do a double take, but this one did, and it laid the groundwork for those same fair-weather fans to become stans when the Jonases released “Sucker” and “Cool” this year.

Also, “Hold On” and “Kids of the Future” made it into the soundtracks of some popular Disney movies like Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board and Meet the Robinsons. Nothing to sneeze at!

Their Hannah Montana Collabs!

Aside from their album, 2007 was also when the Jonases really solidified their place in the Disney hall of fame. (Yes, I’m talking before Joe had to shave daily for JONAS and before Camp Rock made you think you knew how to step.) Ignoring the soul-crushing reports that Nick and Miley Cyrus were dating, their guest stint on Hannah Montana was almost as monumental as when Barack Obama announced his candidacy a few months earlier. (I said ALMOST, so don’t come for me!)

Oh, and they went on a hugely successful tour with Hannah/Miley that somehow became a litmus test for if my mom loved me. (She didn’t get me tickets and I spent a whole week hating her. Sorry, Mom!)

Their Skits!

The Nick Jonas Show, the brothers’ first try at YouTube sketch comedy, and one of the very first videos they ever uploaded was such a hit they had to make a part two.

There’s a reason why when they announced their comeback, they did by recreating one of their throwback skits. It’s because 2007 Jonases were the greatest Jonases.

Their Fashion!

The year also gave us this photo of the brothers holding Dooney & Bourke purses, which is a photo that could have only happened in 2007.

And there’s no way to talk about the Jonas Brothers in 2007 without mentioning their flat-ironed hair, skinny ties, and affinity for wearing sunglasses on the red carpet.

Now this might feel like a misguided attempt to steal the brothers’ shine, but I promise you it’s not. They deserve major props after working so hard for so many years. And I’m not saying it’s been all downhill since 2007, but I’m sorry, nothing ever compares to your first love intro to the JoBros.
