Let The Fall of the House of Usher Soundtrack Be Your Halloween Playlist

WHEN YOU'RE TELLING a horror story, the story is only one part of it. What makes writer/director Mike Flanagan's Netflix limited horror series so great is that he fully understands everything that goes into creating the best of the horror genre; it's not just about a good script, it's not just about jump scares, and it's not just about shocking violence. All of that can fit in, but ultimately it's about bringing all of that together in one neat package. But what can really help to elevate a horror project—whether it's on the big screen, on TV, or in a book—is creating the perfect horror mood. And nothing helps in that process quite as much as picking just the right soundtrack.

Flanagan is no stranger to projects with music that just fit. His third Netflix limited series, Midnight Mass, leaned heavily on the music of Neil Diamond for its coastal New England setting. That may seem a little bizarre of a fit for a story about vampires, grief, and Catholic guilt, but folks... it just worked.

The latest project for Team Flanagan is The Fall of the House of Usher, an 8-part series based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, bringing the famed author's work into a modern-day story that invokes Dopesick, Final Destination, Succession, and, of course, "The Raven" writer Poe's most famous stories.

That all fits into a twisted, moody, gothic story nicely. But its Usher's soundtrack, featuring the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, and the original work of Flanagan's frequent collaborators The Newton Brothers, that help pull the whole thing together into one grim package. And that's just the way we like it.
