Apple TV+’s latest drama, Lessons in Chemistry, is finally here. The series stars Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a chemist working as a lab technician in the 1950s. Though Zott is smarter than her male colleagues, she’s subjected to constant sexism and belittlement. One day, she’s suddenly asked to host a cooking show—and antics ensue.

Lessons in Chemistry is based on Bonnie Garmus's bestselling book of the same name. In an interview with The Guardian, Garmus said of her 2022 novel, "I had my mother's entire generation in mind when I wrote the book. My mother didn’t inspire Elizabeth Zott; instead, I created Elizabeth Zott in honor of her and all the other women whose dreams were sidelined by a society insisting they were incapable of becoming anything more than an average housewife.”

Despite working against gender norms, Zott manages to carve her own life path and encourages others to do the same. While speaking with The Guardian, Garmus explained that Zott's infectious attitude was modeled after her mom’s work ethic. “My mother had been a nurse before having us four kids,” Garmus said. “She talked about it constantly and obviously missed it. When we were all grown, she renewed her nursing license and returned to work, winning nurse of the year, even though she’d been out of work for decades. She was also an expert seamstress—would have made a great surgeon.”

Though Lessons in Chemistry is largely about female empowerment, it’s also about love, loss, and the curveballs that life throws your way. The first two episodes are out now. If you want to keep up with Zott, look below for Lessons in Chemistry's full release schedule.
