Leonardo DiCaprio is widely known for being an award-winning actor, Hollywood heartthrob, and staunch environmentalist. But the Los Angeles native—with an estimated net worth of $300 million—also has a robust history of buying and selling real estate. The Killers of the Flower Moon star owns incredible properties in California and New York, from a sprawling Hollywood Hills compound to two eco-friendly apartments in Manhattan. He even purchased an island off the coast of Belize with plans to heal the natural landscape and create an eco-conscious resort. 1990s: DiCaprio Purchases a $4 Million Hollywood Hills Compound
Naturally, California-born star DiCaprio made his first big real estate move in Los Angeles by securing a compound in the city's Hollywood Hills neighborhood. It's technically made up of two neighboring properties, one of which he purchased from none other than pop icon Madonna for $2.5 million. He bought the other in 1994 and paid a total of $4 million for the homes, according to Realtor.com. Today, the compound includes five adjoining parcels that span more than five acres, according to Mansion Global. DiCaprio has done major renovations, including building a basketball court (which his neighbors sued him for). He tends to use the property for entertaining purposes, from renting it out to his famous friends, like his The Great Gatsby costar Tobey Maguire, to throwing a viewing party for election night in 2020.
1998: DiCaprio Buys a $1.6 Million Malibu Mansion
Fresh off of the success of Titanic, 24-year-old DiCaprio snatched up a Malibu retreat for $1.6 million in 1998. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom residence spans 1,765 square feet and is located inside a gated community and on the strip of sand known as Billionaire's Beach. Built in 1950, the home is the epitome of indoor-outdoor living with floor-to-ceiling windows that highlight ocean views, a spacious deck, and a private courtyard. DiCaprio put the home on the rental market in 2012 and continued to do so seasonally until listing the home for $10.95 million in 2016. By 2017, it was back on the rental market for $25,000 per month. He eventually sold it for $10.3 million in 2021. A few months before it sold, DiCaprio's former interior designer, Megan Weaver, appeared on the podcast Behind the Velvet Rope. She revealed that the home was once covered in Titanic decor and memorabilia. She said the display was tasteful and she believed DiCaprio's mother had been the one to decorate the home with all the film-inspired merchandise.
1999: DiCaprio Scoops Up a $769,000 California Home
Shortly after putting down roots in Malibu, DiCaprio expanded his real estate holdings with the purchase of a Spanish-style hacienda for $769,000 in 1999. Located in Silver Lake, the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home was built in the 1930s. The three-story residence featured exposed beams and hardwood floors. Other highlights included a covered loggia and swimming pool. He sold it for $1.56 million in 2018. (The buyers flipped the property, stripping it of some original period details, and sold it for $3.4 million in 2019.)
2005: DiCaprio Invests in a $1.75 Million Island off the Coast of Belize
DiCaprio's next investment would make any wolf of Wall Street proud: He bought an island off the coast of Belize. But he didn't buy in the 104-acre unpopulated island to turn it into a private sanctuary. Instead, he purchased it with environmental restoration in mind. He partnered with Paul Scialla of the New York–based developer Delos to transform the land—known as Blackadore Caye—into a "restorative island." The project consists of an eco-conscious luxury resort and measures to heal the island itself. When DiCaprio spoke with The New York Times about the project in 2015, the goal was to open the island in 2018. There's no word yet on a new projected timeline for what DiCaprio told the publication "could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement."
2008: DiCaprio Buys a $3.67 Million New York City Apartment
DiCaprio officially became a bicoastal resident in 2008 when he purchased a $3.67 million apartment in New York City. Located in Manhattan's Battery Park at 2 River Terrace, the eco-friendly building offers a bevy of amenities, including a 50-foot lap pool, landscaped terrace, yoga studio, billiards room, kids' playroom, and dog spa. Residents also enjoy twice-filtered air, filtered water, nontoxic materials, and lower energy costs. The waterfront location is a celebrity-favorite spot with units currently or once owned by the likes of Tyra Banks, Cobie Smulders, Will Smith, and more.
2014: DiCaprio Acquires a $5.2 Million Estate in Palm Springs
DiCaprio joined other A-listers in their desire for a desert oasis with the purchase of a $5.2 million Palm Springs estate. Originally built in 1964 by architect Donald Wexler, the midcentury modern home at 432 Hermosa was once occupied by actress Dinah Shore. The six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom abode spans 7,100 square feet. Glass walls throughout offer unobstructed views of the magical mountains beyond. The Old Las Palmas property also includes a guest house, pool, and tennis court. Fans can see the home's unassuming exterior while on one of the many celebrity bus tours of the area, which often highlight other popular homes like Elvis Presley's honeymoon hideaway. DiCaprio still owns the home, but he's had it on the rental market since 2016. Yes, that means fans with deep pockets can book a stay for a starting rate of $3,750 per night.
2014: DiCaprio Purchases a $2.05 Million California Ranch
The Django Unchained star purchased another home in 2014: a $2.05 million ranch in Los Angeles's Studio City. Built in 1937, the seemingly modest home is marked by a fence with a greenery-covered archway. It measures 3,407 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. With vaulted ceilings, a chef's kitchen, multiple fireplaces, a wet bar, and a pool, the home has no shortage of covetable features. However, he ended up selling the home for $2.2 million in 2016.
2014: DiCaprio Shells Out $10 Million for a Condo in New York City
Yes, the Inception star made a third home purchase in 2014. This time, he broadened his East Coast roots with a casual $10 million condo in New York City. Located at 66 East 11th Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom apartment is located in a building that's well-known for its health and wellness amenities. The 3,663-square-foot unit boasts vitamin C–infused showers, purified air and water, in-duct aromatherapy, posture-supportive flooring, antimicrobial coatings on both countertops and doors, and a circadian rhythm lighting system. There's also a private elevator, 11-foot ceilings, and an en suite bathroom with a tub and heated limestone floors. He sold the unit for $8 million in 2016.
2014: DiCaprio Adds Another $8 Million NYC Pad to His Portfolio
DiCaprio's big year of home buying didn't end there. He decided to purchase the two-bedroom apartment next door to his Battery Park unit for $8 million. That meant he gained 2,327 square feet of space and a 1,035-square-foot outdoor terrace. He still owns these units in the celebrity enclave known as Riverhouse, which sits right on the Hudson River.
2017: DiCaprio Makes His Most Expensive Purchase Yet—A $23 Million Beach House in Malibu
The actor made his most expensive home purchase in 2017 when he shelled out a reported $23 million for a Malibu beach house. Surprisingly, the home isn't big at all. The 610-square-foot cottage exists on a 1.8-acre lot in Paradise Cove. The exclusive area is where many celebs, including Barbara Corcoran, also have homes. It's likely he hoped to develop the mostly vacant plot when he bought it. At the time, Mansion Global reported that the former owner got approval to build a new two-story home along with a pool, a cliffside deck, a private beach, and an onsite wastewater treatment. It's unclear if any work has been completed.
2018: DiCaprio Buys $4.91 Million Los Feliz Mansion
In 2018, The Revenant star reportedly bought a Los Angeles property for his father. Located in the Los Feliz neighborhood, DiCaprio paid $4.91 million for the five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home. Built in 1926 and known as Red Oak Manor, the dwelling boasts high ceilings and Tudor-style architectural details that have been updated with a modern flair. The 4,644-square-foot abode has an eat-in kitchen, three fireplaces, and a terrace. He put it on the market for $5.75 in 2021, and it eventually sold for nearly $4.9 million in 2022.
2021: DiCaprio Acquires a $7.1 Million Los Feliz Residence
The same year DiCaprio tried to offload that Los Feliz mansion, he purchased another one. This time, he bought a 1928 Spanish Colonial from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host Jesse Tyler Ferguson for $7.1 million. When Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita lived in the 4,926-square-foot, four-bedroom home, they enlisted Peter Gurski, who was the set decorator for Will & Grace, to help them revamp it. They incorporated some complementary gothic elements, like a black iron staircase and chandelier cage. Some rooms, like the bathroom and library, got a moody makeover with deep, rich colors and metallic accents.
2022: DiCaprio Spends $10.5 Million on Another Hollywood Hills Home
Remember the compound DiCaprio obtained in the 1990s? Well, his most recent expansion of the property came when he bought his neighbor's home for $10.5 million in 2022. Hidden behind hedges, the 1963 home encompasses 3,500 square feet. It has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a pool. Not much else is known about the home because it was never publicly listed.
