Len Chandler, a folk musician who was known for his culturally relevant songs that he previously performed alongside Bob Dylan, has died. He was 88 years old.

The news was reported by the New York Times on Tuesday, after Chandler's longtime friend Lew Irwin confirmed that the musician died on Aug. 28 while at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. Chandler had recently suffered several strokes, according to Irwin.

In addition to being a classically trained oboist, Chandler was also peace and civil rights advocate, often writing songs about the news of the day.

Described by the Times as an early fixture in Greenwich Village folk music revival during the late 1950s and '60s, Chandler started off playing regularly at the Gaslight Cafe in Manhattan, before he was offered a position at WXYZ in Detroit, where he wrote and performed topical songs for local television.

Chandler previously sang alongside Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and more stars at civil rights marches and anti-war protests, including the 1964 March on Washington. He also accompanied Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland on the infamous F.T.A tour.

Dylan previously talked about Chandler in his memoir Chronicles Volume One (2004), where he wrote, "One thing about Chandler was that he was fearless. He didn’t suffer fools, and no one could get in his way."

He also stated, "Len was brilliant and full of goodwill, one of those guys who believed that all of society could be affected by one solitary life."

Chandler is survived by his son, Michael Fox, as well as his wife, Olga Adderley Chandler, who acted under her maiden name, Olga James.
