Leica Just Opened a New Two-Story Flagship Store and Gallery in N.Y.C. Here’s a Look Inside.

Leica is trying to channel a New York state of mind.

The famed German camera maker has just opened a giant new flagship store in the Big Apple. The new location isn’t just a place to buy photography gear—though you can do that there—but will also serve as a gallery and studio space meant to inspire shutter bugs of all experience levels.

The new shop is situated in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, within walking distance of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Highline. It spans 3,000 square feet across two floors and is done up in a monochrome shade of grey as a tribute to the city’s legendary street photography scene.

It’s on the ground floor that you’ll find a boutique, where you’ll be able to check out the brand’s entire portfolio of cameras, like the legendary M system. But cameras aren’t all that Leica makes. The boutique also has luxury watches, as well as the company’s new Cine 1 ultra-short-throw 4K projector, available to buy. This floor will also be home to Leica Gallery NYC. The dedicated space will host exhibitions of works by both renowned photographers and emerging talent. And like at any of the city’s other galleries, some of the work will be available for purchase.

The second floor might turn out to be the flagship’s most interesting feature. It’s been designed to act as a creative hub of sorts, housing a library of photography books curated by Todd Hido as well as a photo studio. The space also has an outdoor patio where hobbyists and experienced photographers like can meet and talk about art and culture—and hopefully be inspired as a result.

“We wanted to create a home for Leica to really celebrate art and culture. To be a place where artists, film directors, and creators can all come,” Mike Giannattasio, Leica’s North American president, recently told Robb Report. “To that point, when we were creating the store we were thinking about the 1970s in New York, the era of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. The story is designed to be a real home for those creatives.”

Leica’s New York flagship location is its seventh store and third gallery in the U.S. It is located at 406 West 13th Street and will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
