Legendary Michigan Ski Area To Open With 30+ Inches Of Snow

Mount Bohemia, a legendary Michigan ski area known for deep snow and wild, ungroomed terrain, will finally open for the season tomorrow, January 17th.

The resort shared the news on Instagram and told skiers what to expect come opening day.

Like many ski resorts throughout North America, Mount Bohemia has had a long, dry start to the 2023-2024 winter—hence the mid-January opening date.

But 2024 brought a welcome change of pace to Mount Bohemia. So far, in Keweenaw County—where Mount Bohemia is located—43 inches of snow have fallen, which has proved to be enough for the resort to get the party started.

On its snow report tab, Mount Bohemia states that 34 inches of snow have fallen at the resort in the past week. Three hundred of the resort's 585 will be available for skiing and riding on opening day—not a bad way to kick off the season.

Still, Mount Bohemia cautioned skiers against getting too excited tomorrow. "Please realize that while there is amazing powder, we are lacking a deep firm base underneath," the resort wrote on Instagram. "You need to ski/ride conservatively and expect the unexpected underneath you until the snow is packed."

Such statements are standard for ski resorts when they first open. The only oddity is that it's not technically the early season at Mount Bohemia.

But just because it's January doesn't mean Mount Bohemia's snowpack is bottomless (it's been a wacky ski season, after all), so tread carefully and, in the wise words of the resort's Instagram announcement, "have fun."
