'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom' Just Broke a Major Nintendo Sales Record

Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has felt inescapable since its release over the weekend, and for good reason. The game sold over 10 million copies worldwide in its first three days of release, becoming the fastest-selling Legend of Zelda game in the franchise's 37-year history.

Tears of the Kingdom also moved over four million units in the Americas, making it the biggest Nintendo game launch in history in that territory. It beats out the likes of blockbuster properties like Pokémon and Mario in achieving that feat.

To put things in perspective, last year's Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet also sold more than 10 million copies worldwide in their first three days of release. That stands as the biggest worldwide launch of a game in Nintendo history.

"Many players are returning to Hyrule with all its new mysteries and possibilities, and with the record-breaking launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch, we can’t wait to see what they’ll create in the game and the stories they’ll share next,” said Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Communications Devon Pritchard in a press statement. “We’re grateful for all of our fans who’ve shown their passion for The Legend of Zelda over the years, and these sales numbers for the latest installment continue to show the strong momentum for both the franchise and Nintendo Switch this year.”

In addition to the game itself, Nintendo is also selling a Tears of the Kingdom-themed Nintendo Switch OLED model, as well as themed Switch Pro Controllers and carrying cases. The game retails for $69.99 and is available in stores and via the Nintendo eShop.
