Almost 20 years after working together on the Legally Blonde sequel, co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Regina King reminisced about their shared Hollywood history. The pair, who played Elle Woods and Grace Rossiter in the 2003 film, recently reunited for a virtual Variety interview to discuss their new TV shows (Little Fires Everywhere/The Morning Show and Watchmen, respectively).

While the actresses stayed mum about whether King would appear in the upcoming Legally Blonde 3, they did reflect on their time working together. "We met each other on Legally Blonde. Remember when you got Sally Field to play that part?" King said, referencing Fields' role as Congresswoman Victoria Rudd. "We were just fanning out. And you got to do that again on Big Little Lies with Meryl Streep. How do you do it, girl? Putting on your producer cap and your acting cap—are you wearing them simultaneously?" Witherspoon responded, "Well, I try and make them an offer they can’t refuse," adding, "I knew I wanted to work with you too. I remember seeing you in Jerry Maguire and I was like, 'I’m going to work with her.' You had a spirit inside of you."

Since co-starring together, both King and Witherspoon have had career overlap, from winning Oscars (King for 2018's If Beale Street Could Talk, Witherspoon for 2005's Walk the Line) to headlining Emmy-nominated TV projects. Witherspoon, who was nominated for Big Little Lies in 2017, praised King for winning three trophies for her performances in American Crime (2015 and 2016) and Seven Seconds (2018).

"The thing I love about you is the stacking of achievements isn’t just for your own gain and benefit," Witherspoon told King. "That you are determined to make a lot of change in our business by committing to hire more women, more people of color—to put them in the driver’s seat. I think there’s such an alignment between a lot of women of our generation, about how we do not want to leave this business the way we found it. And you feel it, right? I feel like if we all look like we’re busy and doing three and four and five jobs, it’s because we’re trying to make up for lost time."

Naturally, conversation turned to future seasons of Watchmen and Big Little Lies. When asked about continuing her HBO superhero series, which creator Damon Lindelof ended after one critically-acclaimed season, King said, "You know, I don’t know. Honestly, I feel like I think HBO would want it back in a heartbeat, but if Damon Lindelof doesn’t see an entry point for season 2—I think that the possibilities are infinite, but I feel that if Damon doesn’t see it, then it’s going to be a no for me."

As for season 3 of Big Little Lies, Witherspoon wasn't willing to rule out another installment. "I never say never, because we thought Big Little Lies was going to be one season, and we had no idea we were going to go back." However, she said she's mainly focused on continuing production on season 2 of The Morning Show, which was shutdown four weeks into filming due to the pandemic.
