While neither vehicle sustained major damage, Kittery police found the driver of the Mercury unconscious and unresponsive at the wheel.

“The man was removed from the vehicle and officers began CPR and life saving measures,” a news release from Kittery police states. “Upon their arrival, personnel from the Kittery Fire Department and Stewart's Ambulance (Service) took over the treatment of the individual.”

The man was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Preliminary investigation by emergency responders indicates the Lee resident suffered a medical event while driving, which caused him to cross lanes and strike the Chevrolet, according to police.

“At this time, it is believed the death of the operator was caused by the medical event and not injury sustained in the actual crash,” Kittery police stated.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup was not injured, police said.

Kittery police are continuing to investigate the crash with the help of the York Police Department’s accident reconstruction team.

The death is the second fatal accident in Kittery in two weeks. On Wednesday, May 17, a 74-year-old Kittery resident died after a medical event police believe caused his car to crash into another near the York town line on Route 1. The operator of the second vehicle in that crash was uninjured.
