MONROE — The River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation will host an introductory course on historic leatherworking from noon to 5 p.m. June 9. The workshop at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor's Center, 333 N. Dixie Highway, will teach the basics of cutting, sewing and assembling a 19th-century wallet like those used during the War of 1812.

The workshop is a beginners-level, hands-on workshop designed to benefit novices. Participants will learn about types of leather and their uses and practice basic cutting and knife-work skills, types of hand tools and their functions, the basic leatherworker’s stitch and an introduction to other kinds of hand-stitching. All students should create a finished piece to take home.

Class is limited to nine participants. For more information on the course and registration, visit the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation’s website under the "Historic Trades Workshops" tab.
