At Least 12 Dead, Many Injured in Mass Shooting in Thousand Oaks, California

The attack happened at Borderline Bar and Grill on College Country Night.

Twelve people are dead after a gunman opened fire inside a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday night. One of the people killed was Sgt. Ron Helus, a sheriff’s deputy and 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, who rushed in to confront the shooter.

The attack occurred at the Borderline Bar and Grill on “College Country Night,” a regular event in which the venue allows patrons as young as 18 years old to come and listen to music; many of the victims are believed to be college students. The suspected gunman is dead. Thousand Oaks has regularly appeared on annual lists of America’s safest cities in which to live.

The massacre at Borderline is the 304th mass shooting this year; it has been 12 days since America’s last mass shooting.
