Learn how to grow a vegetable garden without soil in May's parks program on May 28

On May 28, Bill Van Tine will present the May parks program on how to grow your summer garden without dirt using a technique called hydroponics. The program begins at 6 p.m. at the Otis Park Bath House.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, without soil. No dirt required. There are several different methods of hydroponic gardening, including deep water culture (DWC), drip irrigation, wick system, NFT (nutrient film technique), aeroponics, and aquaponics. Van Tine’s presentation is structured to highlight his experiences over the past 10 summers with vegetable hydroponic gardening.

Van Tine said he will focus on the nutrient film technique of hydroponics that he finds to be the best method to use during summer months. Whether you’ve used hydroponics in the past or are just curious about the technique, you are welcome to attend and bring your questions. Van Tine makes the process easy to understand and encourages people to come and see what the technique is all about.

Please RSVP for the program by May 27, so we know how many people to expect by calling 812-275-5692 or emailing aray@bedford.in.us.

Mark your calendars for the June park’s program on June 25 about “Oaks the Trees of Life.” Judi Brown, director of the Let the Sun Shine In program will present at the Hoosier National Forest office, at 811 Constitution Ave., in Bedford.
