Make Your Home Feel Like Spring by Decorating an Easter Tree

Easter's almost here, and there's so much to look forward to—particularly if you're a member of the Drummond family. In years past, Ree's crew has gone all-out for the holiday, filling Easter baskets, heading to church for a mass service, and finally sitting down to a fabulous Easter brunch.

But even if you're not up for all of those activities and outings, there's another, simpler Easter tradition you can try in 2022: Easter egg trees!

These beautiful, whimsical shrubs feature foraged branches decorated with Easter eggs, and they've actually been popular in Germany and Sweden for centuries. In the past few years, their popularity has grown here in the United States as well.

The tradition of displaying these "Osterbaum," as the trees are dubbed across the pond, was most notably revived in 1965. That's when German couple Christa and Volker Kraft began trimming their own backyard tree with 18 hand-dyed and hand-painted Easter egg "ornaments," according to NBC News. By 2015, the collection of eggs on their tree had grown to include a whopping 10,000 unique eggs—and it took the couple two full weeks to hang them all.

But you don't need two weeks or thousands of eggs to get started. You can create one of these topiaries at home in as little as one afternoon.

"Easter egg trees make a big impact on a mantel or table without a lot of effort," says Haeley Giambalvo, the founder of DIY blog Design Improvised, who posted about her own Easter tree a few years back. "And they're such a great way to add a festive Easter touch to your home without having to do a bunch of decorating."

To create your own, start by foraging a few branches from your yard. (If you're feeling particularly inspired, Haeley recommends spray-painting them a fun color.) Next, fill a favorite vase with floral foam. You can also place a few rocks in the vase to add some extra weight and keep things bottom-heavy. Insert the branches, then enlist your family to help decorate!

"What really makes this a fun project is that the whole family can contribute with their own decorated eggs," Haeley adds. "You could even make it a tradition and have each family member add a new egg each year."

Though blown eggs are typically used, anything goes—provided that it's hollow or at least lightweight enough to keep from excessively weighing down the branches. You could even opt for felt "eggs" (a great option for the younger set), egg-shaped ornaments, store-bought plastic eggs, or watercolor paper eggs.

To attach your eggs to the tree, just thread a thin piece of ribbon or twine through the holes at the end of each blown egg (or create a hole at the top of any crafty creations!), then tie the loose ends to the branch above.

Now, there's only one thing left to do: Display your DIY Easter decoration proudly!
