LeAnn Rimes Reveals Serious Surgery, Gives Update on Her Health
  • LeAnn Rimes revealed that she underwent surgery.

  • The country star had a LEEP procedure done to remove precancerous cells, following an abnormal pap smear.

  • Rimes is now raising awareness for annual screenings and early detection.

LeAnn Rimes has long been open about her health with her fans, most notably giving a personal perspective on living with psoriasis, a common skin condition in which the immune system becomes overactive. Now, the 41-year-old is opening up about a recent health scare that involved surgery and precancerous cells.

The star revealed in an Instagram post that her latest abnormal pap smear and colposcopy revealed that she had high-grade cervical dysplasia, a condition in which abnormal cells grow on the surface of your cervix—which without treatment, can lead to cervical cancer. Rimes consulted her doctor and decided that a LEEP procedure, which would remove the high-grade, abnormal, pre-cancerous cells, would be in her best interest.

“January is usually a challenging month for me. Over the past couple of years, I’ve either been going through dental surgeries or recovering from a vocal hemorrhage around this time, which was all pretty depressing. But, I have to say, this January has been joyful and easeful,” she said in the post.

“However,” she continued, “yesterday, I underwent a minor surgery and I wanted to share what I went in for because I think it’s an important reminder to get our annual screenings in order to catch changes that may be taking place within the body early on.”

Rimes said that she had her annual pap smear several months ago, and the results came back abnormal. But according to her, this wasn’t the first time this happened. “In fact, I’ve had abnormal paps since I was 17, and through regular pap smears and colposcopies, my doctors have been keeping an eye on any cellular changes that could be taking place.”

Many patients are not put under anesthesia for a LEEP procedure, but Rimes shared that she elected to go that route. “I’ve had enough trauma in my life already, so I prefer to be out and comfortable,” she said. “I’ve always been open about my health challenges and this time around is no different,” Rimes continued.

“I think it’s important to share what we are going through with one another, and on another level, for me, as someone who has a platform to be able to raise awareness for issues such as psoriasis, mental health, and now, women’s wellness and the importance of annual screenings and early detection.” Rimes noted that early stages of cervical cancer don’t usually involve symptoms, “so annual screenings and early detection can be lifesaving.”

The star ended the post with a reminder. “So, ladies,” Rimes warned, “please don’t put off getting your annual pap. My men, too—make sure you get your annual physical, minus the pap smear 😂.”

More than anything, Rimes wants to remove the taboo from women’s health issues and end the shame around women’s bodies. “I believe, the more shares and conversations we have around women’s wellness, the more we take the eww factor out of talking about vaginas and put the power back in our hands, to be able to take the best care of our bodies that we can,” she concluded.

She continues to use her platform to raise awareness and share her authentic self and we love her for it. We’re so glad to hear that the star is recovering well!
