The girls of summer are bringing back the love of the game in the new Prime Video series A League of Their Own, inspired by the classic 1992 Penny Marshall film.

The story is about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that sprang up in the Midwest when the stock of athletic young men was depleted during World War II.

The new series encompasses the spirit and expands on the charming comedy movie starring Geena Davis, Madonna, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell and Lori Petty. The new series begins streaming all eight episodes on Prime Video on Friday, Aug. 12.

The Prime Video series stars Abbi Jacobson, Chante Adams, D’Arcy Carden, and Roberta Colindrez, and was co-created by Jacobson and Will Graham.

Although the famous line from the movie and the series (“There's no crying in baseball!") still rings true, the 2022 version of the baseball story is delivered with a lot of heart.

Keep reading for everything we need to know about season 1 of A League of Their Own that is knocking it out of the park.

Is there A League of Their Own trailer?

The trailer for A League of Their Own Season 1 shows Jacobson rushing onto a train for tryouts, as well as players of color encountering racism from white male coaches claiming they aren't "all-American" enough. We also see the sexism female players faced at the time, with suggestions to shorten their skirts and wear more makeup during games.

Was A League of Their Own a true story?

Both the movie and the series used the actual lives of the female ball players as a starting point to expand the heart-warming and bittersweet stories of their lives. The series is based on the actual All-American Girl Professional Baseball League that started to keep America’s favorite pastime alive when the boys and men went off to serve during World War II.

How is the movie A League of Their Own similar to the new Prime Video series?

Like the movie, the new series A League of Their Own is still about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that debuted during World War II. This version of the story features new characters and storylines and explores topics including racism, sexism, relationships, sexuality, and a lot more.

Where can I watch A League of Their Own?

A League of Their Own the series streams exclusively on Prime Video. All eight episodes of Season 1 will premiere on Aug. 12, 2022.

Who is the black lady in A League of Their Own?

Some 30 years ago in the film A League of Their Own, the main cast of the film is all white, a reflection of the fact that like men’s baseball in the early 1940s, the girls league was segregated. However, there is a scene that acknowledges the injustice of excluding women of color from the league. Midway through the film a wild ball lands on the sidelines and Dottie (Geena Davis) calls for one of the African-American women standing nearby to throw it back. The woman throws it to Ellen Sue—who's farther away from her than Dottie—instead, and throws the ball so hard that Ellen Sue's hand hurts when she catches it.

Because the role was a non-speaking one (which made it all the more powerful, even in its brevity), identifying the actress was difficult. However, it is believed to be DeLisa Chinn-Tyler of Indiana, a real-life softball legend.
